The 3 things you HAVE TO know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue Contamination

All over Norfolk we have identified more and more instances of AdBlue contamination whereby an individual has poured AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is partially as a result of motorists not understanding how to use it (please note: it is not a fuel additive), and partially due to the fact that the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are often directly near to one another on the vehicle.

Now, exactly what is the trouble with having AdBlue in your diesel car?

Seeing that AdBlue is primarily ionised water, it's nearly as good as pouring water into your tank. Diesel and water do not mix whatsoever and trying to run a diesel car on water is not going to work. Furthermore, the urea is quite corrosive to the fuel system lines and seals and is at risk of crystallisation, clogging injectors and fuel filters. If you have put AdBlue into a fuel tank get it out asap. And certainly take care not to turn over the motor - not even to move it from the pump. In the instance that you have started the vehicle you would most likely need to have the whole fuel system flushed and fuel filters changed out.

In case you end up in this scenario don’t fret or panic! Contact us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination service. Our technicians have the practical know-how and working experience to get you back on the road promptly and efficiently, without mess or fuss.

I'd had a wonderful day hiking during my off day and felt contented with myself the next day as I set off to assist a new family holidaying in Burnham Norton. They had broken down after filling petrol in their uncle's Volkswagen, and they were approximately half an hour's drive away. I showed up at their car and laughed while I listened to the woman chastising her partner for actually being so foolish. "Exactly how could you even find a way to put the wrong fuel in the car?" she told him. I wanted to clarify that this problem goes on everyday in Norfolk and that it is nothing at all to worry about, nevertheless he still got an earful. I felt sorry for the guy. Anyhow, I extracted the contaminated fuel, flushed the motor and filled them up with the right fuel. Watching them drive away I mouthed bon voyage and thought about what my missus would say to me if ever I made the exact same mistake... I would personally under no circumstances hear the end of it!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
